A strange phenomenon has been taking hold in drum and bass in the past few months. We’re not sure who started it, we’re not sure if it goes beyond online discourse (or even beyond the confines of DNB Talk) but there does seem to be a substantial faction of heads who are trying, neigh, clamouring to elevate the term ‘rollers’ to the status of subgenre.

Darkstep is characterised by intense 2-step drum patterns, odd ambient noises and the reece bass-line sound. The reece bass-line (origin under debate if I'm not mistaken) is dark, heavy and edgy, and often sounds as though it s barking at you. The kick drum or bass drum is probably the most famous of the drums. It sits on the floor in the middle of the drum kit and creates a low, punchy sound. The drummer plays the kick drum with a foot pedal that ends in a beater. This is called the bass drum pedal. Kick drums come in a huge range of sizes.

6. Drum and Bass Music. Drum and Bass or D’n’B Music focuses on the solid drum beats and bass lines, which make it more defined than Dubstep. The fast breakbeats that characterize this music genre have a tempo between 160 and 180 BPM, which listeners describe as a sound that can be felt in the bones.
